SUM Formula in Google Sheets
SUM adds numbers in a range. Use SUMIF/SUMIFS when you only want to add rows that meet a condition.
=SUM(A2:A100)
Adds every number in A2:A100; blanks and text are ignored.
How it works
SUM accepts one or more ranges or values and returns their total. It skips empty cells and text automatically. For totals that depend on a condition, SUMIF adds one criterion and SUMIFS adds several.
Variations
Sum a whole column
=SUM(A2:A)
Open-ended range covers new rows added later.
Sum only rows matching a condition (SUMIF)
=SUMIF(B2:B100, "Paid", A2:A100)
Adds A where the same row in B says Paid.
Sum with several conditions (SUMIFS)
=SUMIFS(A2:A100, B2:B100, "Paid", C2:C100, ">100")
Note: in SUMIFS the sum range comes first.
Sum several separate ranges
=SUM(A2:A10, C2:C10, E2:E10)

FAQ
Why does SUM show 0 or ignore some cells?
Those cells hold text that looks like numbers. Convert with VALUE() or re-enter them as numbers.
What's the difference in argument order between SUMIF and SUMIFS?
SUMIF is (range, criterion, sum_range). SUMIFS is (sum_range, range1, criterion1, ...). The sum range moves to the front in SUMIFS.
